Further details
CHARLES AUGUSTE ÉMILE DURAND CALLED CAROLUS-DURAN (1837-1917), LA LETTRE, OIL ON PANEL, SIGNED AND TRACES OF DATE (LOWER LEFT)
An unopened letter lies on the floor next to a bouquet of flowers thrown at the foot of the sofa, on which a man is slumped, eyes closed seemingly in a deep sleep. Is the young man returning home intoxicated from a night of partying, or is he overwhelmed by bad news? Called either The Letter or The Partygoer, according to the inscriptions on the reverse, the composition can be interpreted in several ways.
Executed in a more spontaneous style, this naturalistic composition shows a different side to the artist's oeuvre and his attraction to the realist painters of his time, foremost among them Manet (1832-1883), with whom the artist enjoyed a genuine friendship in the early 1860s. The irony of history of art would ultimately pit these two artists against each other, despite their mutual respect and interplaying inspiration.
Above all, it reveals the beautiful technique of Carolus-Duran (1837-1917), a skilled painter of Parisian life as well as a brilliant portraitist of his time. The majestic portrait of Marguerite Stern (1866-1956) (Petit Palais, Musée des Beaux-Arts de la Ville de Paris, Paris, inv. PPP3619) painted in 1889, attest to Carolus-Duran's accomplishment as a painter sought after by high society. The artist had several connections with the Stern family, having also painted the portrait of Marguerite's sister-in-law, Sophie Croizette (1847-1901), wife of Jacques Stern (1839-1902) and member of the Comédie-Française.
The attribution of this painting to Carolus-Duran (1837-1917) has been confirmed by Brame & Lorenceau following a physical examination of the work; it now features in their archives on the artist.
