CHRYSOSTOMUS, Johannes (c.345-407)

Enarratio in Esaiam Prophetam. Antwerp: heirs of Jan Steel, 1555. [Bound with:] – Homiliae IX. De Laudibus D. Pauli. Antwerp: heirs of Steel, 1553. [And:] – Homiliae in aliquot veteris Testamenti. Antwerp: heirs of Steel, 1553.

Finely bound for Pope Pius V. It is uniform with two other volumes of works by St. John Chrysostom, printed in the same format by Steel at Antwerp, and therefore forming a uniform set. One volume (Homilies on the Psalms, 1554) was attributed by Hobson to the Farnese Binder (Hobson, French and Italian Collectors, no. 70), and the other volume (Apologiarum, 1553) is described in Legature papali, no. 117, unattributed to a specific binder. Many Farnese bindings have subsequently largely been given to Niccolò Franzese, who worked for the celebrated Grimaldi library distinguished by their Apollo and Pegasus medallions; in 1556 he was appointed binder to the Vatican. The Chrysostom volumes bear a heavy corner tool and spine tools used by the Ruiz Binder, who also worked for Pope Pius V (see Hobson French and Italian Collectors no. 69, attributed to the Farnese Bindery, and Apollo and Pegasus app. IX, without binder attribution). The papal arms and possibly other tools were presumably Vatican property. The companion volume was in the collections of Cortlandt Bishop (sale 1938, lot 430) and J.R. Abbey (1965 sale, lot 193), among others, already separated from the present volume. Hobson did not include either volume in Apollo and Pegasus (1975). See Legature papali de Eugenio IV a Paolo VI, no. 114 for another Pius V binding with the same large cornerpieces.

3 works in one volume, octavo (162 x 102mm). Printer’s device on each title (very occasional faint dampstain or small stain, faint browning, small burn-hole in (:)M8). Roman binding of c.1566-70 for Pope Pius V: gold-tooled red morocco over thin wooden boards, his papal arms at centre of both sides within a shaped cartouche, large foliate tool at corners, other arabesques, front cover lettered ‘Pius / P M’ and back cover with author and title above and ‘P M’ below, spine lettered in second compartment, others with foliate tools, round bosses at each corner, edges gilt, gauffered and painted with pink vinework, his arms at centre of fore-edges and ‘Pius’ gauffered on upper and lower edges (expert repair at hinges, and head and foot of spine). Provenance: Michele Ghisleri, Pope Pius V (1566-1572) – Capuchin convent at Bene (17th-century gift inscription from Salomon, doctor of law) – Ch. Al. Ganora 1867 (pastedown inscription) – Carlo Ponzone di Casale, priest (19th-century bookplate).
