Lot 110 | Collected works of Thomas More in Latin
MORE, Sir Thomas (1478-1535). Lucubrationes, ab innumeris mendis repurgatae. Utopiae libri II. Progymnasmata. Epigrammata. Ex Luciano conversa quaedam. Declamatio Luciano respondens. Epistolae. Basel: F. Episcopius, 1563.

The first collected edition of the works of Sir Thomas More in Latin. More, the “man for all seasons,” was a Catholic scholar and humanist executed by the order of King Henry VIII for refusing to sign the oath acknowledging Henry as head of the Church. A student of Thomas Linacre and William Grocyn, More was a noted philosopher—most famous for his 1516 Utopia—and himself an ardent burner of heretics. This volume includes Utopia, More's translations of the ancient satirist Lucian, and all his Latin poetry. Adams 1752.

Octavo (160 x 110mm). Full-page woodcut depicting the island of Utopia, woodcut printer's devices on title and colophon (first leaf remargined at gutter, pale dampstain at end). Contemporary blindstamped calf (neatly rebacked preserving original spine panel and endpapers). Provenance: William Salkeld (armorial bookplate).
