COMMELIN Jan (1629-1692) and Caspar COMMELIN (1667-1731)

Horti Medici Amstelodamensis rariorum. Amsterdam: P. & J. Blaeu, 1697-1701.

Commelin family copy of the first edition of this important description of East- and West-Indian plants. Jan Commelin, director of the Amsterdam Physic Gardens, composed the first volume which was edited posthumously by F. Ruysch and F. Kiggelar. The second volume is by Jan’s nephew, Caspar Commelin, and contains an enlargement on some of the notes contained in the first volume, with further notes on African plants. We have not been able to trace the ‘S. Commeline’ of the bookplate, but they must be of the Commelin family as the bookplate’s arms are the same as those of Jan reproduced in one of the engraved plates. Cleveland Collections 304; Dunthorne 81; Great Flower Books (1990) p.88; Hunt 399; Nissen BBI 389; Stafleu-Cowan TL2 1187.

2 volumes, folio (384 x 256mm). Latin half-titles, engraved frontispieces, Latin title-pages printed in red and black followed by Dutch title-pages printed in black, 4 engraved plates of arms, and 224 numbered engraved plates on 222 leaves with pls 42-44 in vol. 1 on one leaf, and Latin and Dutch text printed in two columns (vol. 1: a few plates trimmed close at head, 70mm marginal tear to pl. 38 without loss, pl. 6 and text to pl. 7 lightly creased; both vols with occasional scattered insignificant spotting, fractionally heavier in vol. 1). 18th-century calf, covers with gilt frame of a palmette roll-tool, gilt edges (rebacked, very worn, calf scraped, defective spines and covers detached). Provenance: S. Commeline (late 18th-/early 19th-century armorial bookplate; Franks I, 6557).
