The name de Heem is familiar to all collectors of 17th-century Dutch and Flemish paintings, as well as to other art lovers. Behind this name lies not only Jan Davidsz. de Heem (ca. 1606 - 1683), but also the dynasty he founded, beginning with his talented son Cornelis, who successfully continued the family tradition until 1695.
Cornelis de Heem's work mainly comprises small still lifes featuring fruit and delicacies, often accompanied by wine glasses, as well as floral motifs, mostly in the form of garlands or wreaths. Through masterful contrasts between the different surfaces and colours of the fruit - matt versus transparent or pale versus bright - the artist succeeds in achieving surprising three-dimensional effects in a small space. This can also be observed in the small painting offered here, which was created around 1660. Peaches, grapes and cherries are arranged in a pyramid-shaped composition that transitions from the warm tones of summer fruits to the cooler tones of autumn fruits. By juxtaposing fleshy surfaces, such as those of the peaches, with others that are more transparent and delicate, such as those of the cherries and grapes, de Heem offers the viewer a diverse mosaic in which each element is accentuated by its opposite.
According to the latest research, a stylistic development can be seen in de Heem's works: in his early works, his still life compositions are relatively bright, with soft brushstrokes, while later he chose a darker atmosphere and the colours appear harder. The present painting, which was created around the middle of his artistic career, is a little gem in which the artist has not yet stiffened the colours and light effects.

We are grateful to Fred G. Meijer, Amsterdam, who confirmed the attribution after examining the original painting.
