CRASTONUS, Johannes (c. 1420-1497)
Lexicon Latino-Graecum [Vocabulista]. Reggio Emilia: Dionysius Bertochus and Marcus Antonius de Bazaleriis, 1497.
Third edition of a Latin-Greek dictionary compiled by the Italian Carmelite humanist, Giovanni Crastone. No other copy of any incunable edition is recorded on the market in RBH. Crastone was a significant, if not well known, figure in the transmission of Greek, via his translation of Lascaris’ Greek grammar; his translation and edition of the Greek Psalter; and his Greek-Latin dictionaries. The Vocubulista is a condensed version of his larger Lexicon Graeco-Latinum, now not only shorter but ordered by the Latin, not Greek, word. Variants are noted in quire A; the present copy agrees with the main GW entry and BL copy IA.34069. HC 5817; GW 7818; BMC VII 1091, XII 77; CIBN C-664; Bod-inc C-476; BSB-Ink C-694; Goff C-964; ISTC ic00964000.

Chancery quarto (189 x 126mm). 114 leaves (of 116, without first and final blank) leaves. Greek and roman types (single wormhole touching a few letters, occasional light/small stain, small adhesion on H1 affecting a few letters). Modern binding of blue straight-grained morocco tooled in gilt and blind to an antique style, flat spine lettered and gilt, gilt edges. Provenance: Parma, Royal Library (engraved bookplate on verso of first text leaf) – William O'Brien (Milltown Park Charitable Trust sale, Sotheby’s 7 June 2017, lot 116).
