First American edition of Darwin’s Origin of Species, first issue, with two quotations facing the title. This work 'marked a turning point, not only in the history of science, but in the history of ideas in general, for there is no field of human intellectual endeavour that has not been influenced by the thought and fact of evolution' (DSB III, p.571). Freeman 377.
Octavo (195 x 125mm). Half-title, folding lithographic diagram (some spotting and browning, a few corners lightly creased and some at end faintly dampstained). Original green blind-stamped cloth, spine lettered in gilt (extremities lightly rubbed, neat repairs to spine ends and hinges, foot of text block slightly chipped not affecting text). Provenance: C. [?]Fr. Wreaks (ownership inscription on title dated 24th January 1860) – C. J. Wreaks (ownership inscription on front endpaper) – S. B. Wakeman (possibly Stephen Banks Wakeman of Saugatuck, Connecticut, 1835-1930, noted for his role in local agricultural societies; ownership inscriptions in pencil on endpaper and title, possibly his pencil annotations to the margins) – Liberal University Library (remains of label) – Dr. Brant Mittler (sold Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, 9 November 2021, lot 8).
