The Winner of the Hawthornden Prize, In Parenthesis is Jones’s richly allusive epic poem based on his experiences in the First World War. It was praised by W.B. Yeats and W.H. Auden as a masterpiece of modern literature, while T.S. Eliot described it as ‘a work of genius’ (‘Introduction’ to 1961 edition).
