Lot 85 | De architectura
VITRUVIUS (1st century). De architectura. [And:] CLEONIDES (2nd century). Harmonicum introductorium. Translated by Georgio Valla. [And:] POLIZIANO, Angelo (1454-1494). Panepistemon. [And:] –. Lamia. [And:] FRONTINUS, Iulius (1st century). De aquaeductibus. Venice: Simon Bevilaqua, 3 August 1497.

First edition of Cleonides and third edition of Vitruvius. De architectura, the only surviving work on architectural theory from antiquity, had a profound effect on thinkers and designers in the Renaissance—most notably, Leonardo da Vinci, whose illustration of the Vitruvian Man has become an icon of the period. The inclusion here of Cleonides’ work on music theory reflects the interest and importance in acoustics for architects in this period—but also, alongside these two works by Poliziano, the role of architecture as not just a practical art but a philosophical exploration of proportion and harmony. The text of this edition was used as the basis for Cesariano’s translation in the monumental Como Vitruvius, published in 1521. ISTC ic00742000; BSB-Ink C-461; GW 7123.

Folio (302 x 200mm). 93 leaves (of 94, without blank). Woodcut diagrams and initials (small dampstain at lower margin; occasional wormholes, some filled in; some leaves toned). 19th-century stiff vellum (upper board starting, light staining front pastedown). Provenance: erased stamp on title.
