The English Bible, containing the Old Testament & the New translated out of the original tongues by special command of His Majesty King James the First. Hammersmith: The Doves Press, 1903-1905.
An extra-illustrated and elaborately bound copy of ‘The magnum opus of the Doves Press […] nothing is so stark and pure, such unbending art as the Doves Bible' (Franklin). Limited edition, one of 500 copies on paper, of an edition of 502. Extra-illustrated with 10 full-page paintings by J. Vila, 3 original drawings and 10 prints. 5 volumes, folio (332 x 229mm), limited edition of 502 copies, of which this is one of 500 copies on paper, numerous initial letters printed in red, EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED with 10 full-page original paintings of biblical scenes by J. Vila (seven signed), one mounted to each pastedown, 3 original drawings, and 10 small prints, the drawings and prints mounted to size, (some light to medium scattered spotting, without some blank leaves: final 2 blanks in volume 1, and first 6 blanks in volumes 3 and 4). Contemporary full green crushed morocco gilt, each cover with the same design of a large gilt cross with central gilt stamp portrait of Christ, gilt stamp crown of thorns and nails lower down the cross, and decorative red and orange morocco gilt inlays, gilt rays emanating from the cross, surrounded by long floral sprays in gilt with inlaid yellow morocco petals, spines in six compartments with raised bands gilt, lettered in the second and fourth compartments, the other four compartments with a large single flower gilt with inlaid morocco petals, top edges gilt, others uncut, purple watered silk free endpapers, gilt doublures (joints rather rubbed, fraying to edges of silk endpapers, extremities slightly rubbed, slight fading to spines). Provenance: Sensui Shoji (Japanese bibliophile and author, 1903-1991).
