DUBOIS, Charles-Frédéric (1804-1867) and Alphonse DUBOIS (1831-1921)

Les lépidoptères de la Belgique, leurs chenilles et leurs chrysalides décrits et figurés d'après nature. Brussels [and] Leipzig: Merzbach et Falk, 1874.

Only a small number ever printed, a beautiful copy of Dubois' survey of the lepidoptera of Belgium, complete with contemporary hand-coloured plates illustrating the various species of butterflies, caterpillars and their chrysalides. This copy is complete with the fold-out entomological map of Belgium. Charles-Frédéric Dubois was a Belgium naturalist and this present publication charts the various species of butterfly the academic studied and recorded in his home country. Following his death in 1867, his son Alphonse, curator at the Royal Museum of Natural History in Belgium, completed the work. Nissen DZB 1164.

3 volumes, octavo (269 x 169mm). Each volume with half-title and title page, 423 hand-coloured lithographic plates heightened with gum arabic, and one colour-printed folding map at front of volume I, each plate accompanied by a leaf of letterpress (very occasional spotting, vol. II: plate title Laria V Noir significantly cut down). Red half morocco and red marbled boards, spines intricately decorated and lettered in gilt with repeated foliate and butterfly motifs (extremities lightly rubbed and boards with occasional scratches).
