Lot 16 | Dunois Master and St Stephen Master
Valeur estimée
£ 1 500 – 2 000
Dunois Master and St Stephen Master

Full borders on a bifolium from a Book of Hours, in Latin, use of Rouen [Rouen, c.1450–60]

A bifolium from a de luxe Hours for the use of Rouen illuminated by the Dunois and St Stephen Masters.

Each leaf c.190 x 140mm., 16 lines, ruled space: c.100 x 65mm, comprising part of the Penitential Psalms, the two-line initial 'E' on f.1r introducing the prayers for the salvation of the deceased, pencil folio numbers ‘57' and '58' in the lower-right recto corners (sewing-stations indented into the gutter edge, remains of archival support at hinge).

Provenance:

(1) This bifolium was ff.57-58 in an Hours for the use of Rouen. It was in an 18th-century binding and had an unidentified French(?) armorial bookplate.

(2) The parent manuscript was sold at Sotheby's, 5 December 2000, lot 62, misbound and missing many leaves (including all but two of the miniatures, illuminated by the Dunois Master and his follower the St Stephen Master) and was broken-up shortly thereafter: a gathering of text leaves was sold at Sotheby’s, 19 June 2001, lot 13; several other text leaves were sold at Christie’s, 11 July 2002, lot 5; and a single text leaf was sold at Christie's, 15 December 2021, lot 16); both miniatures sold at Christie’s, 9 December 2020, lots 27 and 28.

The profusion of illuminated initials and full borders on both leaves of this text bifolium show that the parent manuscript was of great luxury. The illuminators of the miniatures worked for such illustrious patrons as the Duke of Bedford, the Chancellor Guillaume Jouvenel des Ursins, and Simon de Varie.
