MANUEL I, King of Portugal (1469-1521). Epistola potentissimi ac invictissimi Emanuelis Regis Portugaliae & Algarbiorum, &c De Victoriis habitis in India, & Malacha. Vienna: Hieronymus Vietor & Johannes Singriener, 16 October [1513].

"Deus cunctis ex gentibus unamIam facturus,
iter pandit, quo iungere possit
Ortus & occasus facili commertia nixu"

Second[?] Latin edition of the letter from the King of Portugal to Pope Leo X reporting on the conquest of Malacca. See lot 37 for a description of the contents. This edition includes an introduction by Jakob Spiegel (1483-1547), a prominent humanist at the court of Maximilian I. The quotation above is included in his introduction and loosely translates as: "God will make one of all nations / He lays the path by which he can join / Sunrise and sunset with easy commerce." VD16 P 4374.

Quarto (210 x 143mm). Four leaves. Woodcut arms of Portugal on the title (pressed). Full red morocco by Chambolle-Duru, gilt turn-ins, edges gilt (tips rubbed, boards mildly darkened). Provenance: Dorotheerkloster, Vienna (contemporary ownership inscription on colophon page) – José Pinto Leite, 2nd Count of Penha Longa, 1871–1956 (supralibros) – with Maggs Bros., A Royal Catalogue issued to Commemorate the Silver Jubilee of H.M. King George V, 1935, catalogue 606, no. 582 – José Mindlin (1914-2010; bookplate).
