EUCLID (fl. 300 B.C.E.)

[Opera]. Elementorum libri XIII [-Phaenomena; Specularia; Perspectiva; Data]. Translated by Bartolommeo Zamberti. Venice: Johannes Tacuinus, 1510.

Rare second issue of the first complete edition of Euclid’s works. First printed in 1505, this 1510 issue consists of 1505 sheets reissued with reset sheets from quire P. It is a translation into Latin from the Greek by Bartolommeo Zamberti, who claims that he has restored and excluded from the exposition of Theon many things that were 'subuersa et prepostere voluta' in the version of Campanus. For example, the Pythagorean proposition becomes the 47th of the first book as we know it (instead 46th in Campano). Zamberti contributes a long preface and a life of Euclid. The 13 books of the Elements are followed by the Phaenomena, Specularia, &c. 'In 1510 some of the same sheets were reissued with a freshly printed last page containing the colophon, a misreading of which has often led to the issue being described as of 1517. Both issues seem to be among the rarest of early Euclids’ (Thomas Stanford). In fact the book was entirely reset after quire O for this issue. Adams E-973; Thomas-Stanford 5; Essling 284; Sander 2609. Riccardi II 645; BMSTC Italy p.238.

Folio (306 x 215mm). Title with xylographic heading and woodcut vignette of St. John the Baptist, A1r printed in red and black within woodcut historiated border, woodcut initials (the larger historiated showing putti at play), printer’s device on last verso, and numerous woodcut diagrams in margins and text (lower margin of title a little soiled, some occasional pale marginal dampstaining, small wormtracks in margins of first and last quires, without final blank 2F6, lower outer corner of A1 expertly restored) Contemporary limp vellum, remains of ties (a little soiled and creased). Provenance: motto ‘nulla virtus sine labore’ written in contemporary hand in shield in border.
