CHARLEVOIX, Pierre-François-Xavier de (1682-1761). Histoire et description générale de la Nouvelle France, avec le Journal historique d'un voyage fait par ordre du roi dans l'Amérique septentrionnale. Paris: Rollin fils, 1744.

The first edition of "one of the most important works there is relating to Canada" (Sabin). This work is the first general history of the French possessions in North America, issued by five printers in 1744 with no priority. Charlevoix, traveling by canoe with his companions, surveyed the French settlements and trade routes along the St. Laurent and Mississippi valleys and the Great Lakes. Charlevoix's account "is one of the best authorities concerning various Indian tribes, some of which no longer exist" (Lande). It concludes with a description of the flora of Canada and Florida. Nicholas Bellin's maps, including the important map of North America, present the latest cartographic information available to Europeans at the time. Howes C-307; Lande 126; Sabin 12136.

Six volumes, 12mo (168 x 100mm). 28 folding engraved maps and plans, 44 botanical plates in volume IV (tear on corner of leaf *6 of vol. 1; occasional faint spotting). 18th century speckled calf, spines gilt (remboitage preserving original endpapers, neatly refurbished). Provenance: unidentified 18th century ownership signature on vol. I title – Säfstaholms Bibliothek (bookplate) – Nils Olof "Olle" Axel Norbeck (1896-1976, Swedish banker; bookplate).
