De vetustate Iudeorum, in Latin, illuminated manuscript on vellum [Italy, Florence, c.1450]
A staunch defence of Judaism against criticism by the Egyptian author Apion: a handsome illuminated humanist copy of a seminal work of polemical discourse by the Roman-Jewish historian and military leader Flavius Josephus.
235 x 153mm. i + 70 + iii leaves, complete, collation: 1-710 modern foliation in pencil 1-70 followed here, 25 lines written in a fine humanistic script, ruled space: 143 x 73mm, vertical catchwords and quire signatures survive, one large white-vine initial extending into a three-sided border, one illuminated initial, running headers and rubrics in red (a few smudges and natural flaws in vellum, else in excellent condition with wide margins). Bound in 19th-century Italian calf gilt, title in gold on spine 'JOSEPHUS/DE/VETUSTATE/JUDEORUM' and 'M.S./SUPER/MEMB/SAEC. XV' (some scuffing, spine a little cracked and coming away from the text block, lacking small upper fragment of spine).
