Further details

FRANS POURBUS THE YOUNGER (1569-1622), PORTRAIT OF VINCENT I OF MANTUA (1562-1612), DUKE OF MANTUA AND MONTFERRAT, IN ARMOUR, WEARING THE ORDER OF THE GOLDEN FLEECE, HALF-LENGTH, OIL ON CANVAS, DATED AND INSCRIBED

An emblematic figure in the Gonzaga family, Vincent I of Mantua (1562-1612) distinguished himself at the turn of the Seventeenth Century through his passion for the arts. His refined lifestyle and frequent encounters with the courts of Northern Europe, led him to turn his attention beyond the Italian borders to the artistic heartland of Flanders.

In Brussels and Antwerp, the Duke bought fabrics, miniatures and paintings, and took the opportunity to meet artists and craftsmen. It was in 1599 that the Duke met Frans Pourbus the Younger (1569-1622), portraitist to the Archdukes Albert (1559-1621) and Isabella (1566-1633) of Austria, and invited him to the Court of Mantua. The Flemish painter subsequently painted various portraits of the Gonzaga.

The portrait shown here, dated around 1605 by Blaise Ducos, depicts Vincent wearing a suit of armour and cartwheel ruff, from which protrudes the collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece (B. Ducos, 2011, op. cit. supra). This version should be compared with the portrait formerly in the collection of Martin B. Asscher, which shows the Duke, slightly younger, in a similar position (B. Ducos, 2011, op. cit., no. P.A.22). This type of portrait, imbued with all the trappings of power, was not intended to adorn the palace of Mantua, but rather to serve as a diplomatic gift to foreign courts (B. Ducos, 2011, op. cit. supra).
