Franz Schubert (1797-1828)
Erlkönig. Ballade von Göthe, in Musik gesetzt [...] 1tes Werk [D.328]. Vienna: In Comission Bey Cappi Und Diabelli, n.d., [watermarked 1821]
First edition of Schubert's celebrated song Erlkönig, bearing his original Control Mark.

Provenance:
(1) Moritz Deutsch (1818-1892, second cantor of the Liberal temple in Vienna, later chief cantor at the Reform synagogue in Breslau; ink initials, ‘M D’, in margin of title).

(2) Sotheby’s, 9 June 2010, lot 79.

(3) Schøyen Collection, MS 5448.

Schubert's control markings are present only on the earliest issues of his Lieder, published as Opus 1 to Opus 14 between 1821 and 1822, and confirm they are the earliest copies issued directly on behalf of the composer. While debate exists as to whether the control markings, located on the versos of the final leaves of the editions, were made by Schubert himself, they are authentic in the sense of being made either by him or on his behalf by his brother Ferdinand Schubert, Leopold Sonnleithner and perhaps a few others. This is the first issue of Schubert's Opus 1, published without metronome marks or publisher's plate number 766. Hoboken 1; Deutsch 1a.
