FIVE SILVER TRAVELLING SHRINES, SO-CALLED GA'US.

Origin: Tibet.
Technique: Silver, repoussé. Textile fragments. Stone trimming.
Description: Five two-part amulet containers. Four in lotus leaf form and one round. The fronts made of
silver decorated with deities and geometric patterns and tendrils, partially gilded and
set with stones. The backs made of sheet copper, one engraved with the mystical monogram
Namchu Wangden.
Measurement: Height 7-17,5cm.


Tibetan gaus (ga'u) are small altar shrines made of metal, portable relic containers or
small box-like objects for relics or amulets, which are attached to the neck on a chain or
to the hair with a barrette. They may contain small statues of Tibetan deities or Buddhas
as miniature paintings - the so-called 'tsakli'.
