Nuremberg: Paul Lochner, 1729

Six parts in one volume, revised and updated by Valentin Trichter (first edition thus), folio (400 x 255mm.), armorial engraving on recto of dedication, an allegorical frontispiece, 62 copperplates by Andreas and Engelhard Nunzer, 9 double-page, 6 wood-engraved vignettes, contemporary marbled sheep, raised bands, spine panels with gilt floral ornament, title page backed with strong paper, some browning as normal, minor wear to extremities

First printed by the author in 1609, the text of this comprehensive encyclopaedia of the horse by equestrian Georg Engelhardt von Löhneyss (1552-1622) has been updated here by Nuremberg equerry Valentin Trichter, and illustrated with striking new plates by Nuremberg artists Andreas and Engelhard Nunzer.

Born into the nobility, Löhneyss grew up around fine horses, and his love and respect for them suffuses this work. He describes various breeds, their anatomy, the care they require, and issues of breeding. Also covered is the equipage of horsemanship—bridles, reins, curbs, bits, saddlery—and habits for riders, as well as equestrian events, including tournaments and parades.

In 1575, Löhneyss joined the Court of the Elector Augustus as stable master and riding instructor, and in 1583 became head of the stables of Duke Julius of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel in Gröningen. By 1596, he had acquired his own estate, stable, and stud farm in Remlingen, and had begun work on this book. Unable to come to an agreement with a Frankfurt printer, he bought his own press and set up a printing workshop on his estate, hiring engravers to produce illustrations for the 1609 first issue.

Published 120 years after the first, the present edition was brought up to date and organized more systematically by another horseman, Valentin Trichter (1685-1750), head of the riding school at the University of Altdorf; it is generally considered the best and most useful edition of “Cavalleria.” The superb new plates created for this edition were designed by Engelhard Nunzer (1661-1733) and engraved by his brother Andreas (fl. 1622-40). In addition to depicting the various breeds of horses, the folding plates here illustrate lavish tournaments and processions, including one that shows riders on elephants, camels, an ostrich, and other exotic animals in addition to horses, and another that incorporates an ornate Baroque sleigh.
