GILBERT, Thomas (fl. 1789)

Voyage from New South Wales to Canton ... with views of the islands discovered. London: George Stafford for J. Debrett, 1789.

First edition detailing the first trading voyage from Australia. ‘It is an important account of the exploration of the South Pacific and was, at the time, a book which attracted the same attention as others which sprang from the expedition of the First Fleet … It is quite rare – hard enough to find on its own’ (Wantrup, pp.99-100). ‘The Charlotte, commanded by Captain Gilbert, was one of the first fleet of ships conveying convicts and settlers to New South Wales in 1787. Having landed their consignment of convicts, the Charlotte and Scarborough, under Captain Marshall, proceeded to Canton to bring back a cargo of tea for the East India Company. Making its way to Canton on a track lying many degrees to the east of that pursued by any of the circumnavigators, Gilbert and Marshall discovered many important islands, including the ones that bear their respective names’ (Hill). Ferguson 38; Hill 702; Lust 165; Wantrup (2023) 18.

Quarto (300 x 243mm). Half-title, title with engraved vignette, 2pp. of ads at end, 4 engraved folding plates of coastal profiles (some creasing throughout, occasional light soiling and browning , faint stain to half-title, title, and ads, the plates lightly spotted and browned with a couple of edges frayed). Original stitched drab wrappers (worn, lacking backstrip, front wrapper almost detached, corners heavily dogeared and extremities rubbed, some staining to wrappers).
