The impressive centrepiece carries a bowl made of malachite, which was mainly extracted
from Russian quarries and mines in the late 18th and 19th century. Due to its preciousness
and the fact that large pieces of the stone were very difficult to process, it was turned
into sought-after decorative objects to adorn palaces and salons. Among the most
significant is the famous Malachite Hall, which Tsar Nicholas I. created in the Winter
Palace in St. Petersburg as an expression of his great preference for this exquisite
material. Combined here with the fire-gilt bronze, crafted in the studio of
Pierre-Philippe Thomires, who was known throughout Europe for his luxurious bronze
objects, this centrepiece is a truly brilliant highlight for any table.
Malachite bowl: - Somewhat rubbed on all sides and with minor scratches and soiling. Bronze top: - With rubbing typical of age and fine superficial scratches and light soiling. - The underside of the foot with clear signs of age and the gluing of the screwed wooden plate partially lost. - Overall in good condition.
