Further details

GIOVANNI DOMENICO TIEPOLO, A COW IN A LANDSCAPE WITH GOAT, TURTLE AND AN OWL, BLACK CHALK, PEN AND BROWN INK, BROWN WASH, SIGNED
Member of a dynasty of Venetian painters and trained by his father Giovanni Batista, Gian Domenico Tiepolo is best known for his carnival scenes and punchinelli, but his work is much more diverse. He produced several animal-related series (elephants, for example: Elephant in a Landscape at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, inv. 60.12; and Rampaging Elephants at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, inv. 2007.111.172), all painted in the same brown wash style. The present sheet is more specifically related to the farm bestiary illustrated by other drawings in public collections, such as Cattle in a Landscape (Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, inv. 1975.1.529) and Two Donkeys and a Goat in a Landscape (Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, inv. PD.32-1959). As Byam Shaw suggests, although Tiepolo's primary inspiration certainly came from the animals of the Venetian terra ferma, he also drew on the engravings of the Florentine Stefano della Bella (1610-1664) and the German Johann Elias Ridinger (1698-1767), whom he may have met personally when he assisted his father in Würzburg between 1751 and 1753 (J. Byam Shaw, The Drawings of Domenico Tiepolo, London 1962, p. 43).
However, the present drawing is clearly distinguished by the strange combination of animals it depicts (a goat, a cow, but also an owl and a tortoise), with no apparent respect for proportions. While this choice clearly shows the artist's taste for the incongruous and a definite sense of dark humour (such as the horse's skull and the dead bird).
This drawing was part of the collection of Herbert List, the influential German photographer inspired by surrealism. Bought by the Italian drawing collector Wolfgang Ratjen, the collection was eventually acquired almost in its entirety by the National Gallery of Washington on the latter's death.
