Miles Davis

MILES DAVIS (1926-1991)

Giulia and Miles, 1980s

felt pen on paper, unsigned

415 x 295 mm; window mounted (553 x 443 mm)

accompanied by documents concerning the provenance

After Miles had a stroke in 1982, he took up drawing to improve the strength and flexibility of his paralysed hand, and to keep his mind occupied with something when he wasn't playing music. 'More and more I have been drawing and painting', said Miles, 'It's soothing for me to paint and I just love seeing what comes out of my imagination. Gallerist Joanne Nerlino, described Miles' art as "Figurative Expressionist": 'they are expressionist paintings with figures merging through them.' Cited in Cole, The Last Miles, 125-6. Provenance: Giulia Troja (companion of Miles Davis 1982-85).
