Brown diamonds are the most common fancy color diamond and are found in mines throughout the world including those in South Africa as all as the Argyle mine of Australia. The brown color can arise from the substitution of carbon for nitrogen - the same element that is responsible for yellow- or from structural alterations of the diamond crystal lattice. Brown diamonds can be found in a variety of hues and tones, which have inspired color names such as chocolate, cognac, amber and champagne.
