György Ligeti (1923-2006)
Autograph working manuscript signed (in orange pencil, 'G. Ligeti') for the third section of Monument – Selbstporträt – Bewegung (Monument – Self portrait – Movement) for 2 pianos, [1976]
A delicate, complex draft for this 1976 rhythmic work for two pianos.

In pencil, with occasional blue and orange pencil, a heavily reworked draft with emendations and cancellations, 16 bars in three systems of four staves, followed by additional sketch material, one page, 271 x 339mm, 24-stave paper, autograph title '3. DISLOKATION / VERWERFUNGEN – DISLOCATIONS', directions annotated in autograph in German at upper and right margins, autograph inscription in faint orange pencil; laid onto mount.

Provenance:
(1) A. Janke (inscribed to him by the composer).

(2) Musikantiquariat Dr. Ulrich Drüner, Stuttgart, February 2009.

(3) Schøyen Collection, MS 5425.

One of the most important avant-garde composers of the post-war period, Ligeti was from 1973 professor of composition at the Hamburg Hochschule für Musik und Theater. After earlier focuses on micropolyphony and sonorism Ligeti had by this period switched his concentration to rhythm, and the present manuscript with its constant repetition of very small clusters in shifting combinations is highly representative.
