Lot 209 | [HAWORTH, Adrian Hardy (fl.1802-1828)]
[HAWORTH, Adrian Hardy (fl.1802-1828)]

Prodromus Lepidopterorum Britannicorum. Holt: J. Parslee, 1802.

Extremely rare catalogue of British lepidoptera, not recorded in ESTC. Freeman's pagination omits leaf a4, present here, which prints the terms of becoming a member of the Aurelian Society, described in the preface as a 'very select circle of Entomological Amateurs.' It must have been a small society indeed, as the terms of membership were onerous, each member having to possess a cabinet of lepidoptera specimens from which they obliged to donate specimens to the Aurelian [i.e. the society's] Cabinet which were not already present. Freeman British Natural History Books 1598.

Small quarto (200 x 155mm). (Short tears repaired with old tape on versoes of title and final leaf due to erasure of stamps, occasional faint spotting and soiling). Original paper-backed marbled boards, printed pink paper label to upper cover (spine defective and the whole loose, extremities rubbed); contained in a modern cloth box. Provenance: F. Stephens (ink ownership inscription dated 1819 on front free endpaper) – stamps erased from title and final leaf – J.M. Chalmers-Hunt (bookplate in box).
