HENRI-ALEXANDRE-GEORGES REGNAULT, AUTOMEDON WITH THE HORSES OF ACHILLES (RECTO); SCKETCH (VERSO), CHARCOAL, STUMPED, MONOGRAMMED AND DATED

This drawing is a preparatory study for a painting realized in Rome in 1867-1868 by Henri Regnault when he was a resident at the Académie de France in Rome after winning the Grand Prix in 1866. The painting and the corresponding oil sketch are in the Museum of Fine Art, Boston (inv. 90.152; and inv. 1998.65). Inspired by the Iliad, the painting depicts the Greek mythological character Automedon, Achilles' charioteer, struggling to rein in the divine horses of the Greek warrior’s. Aware that they will carry Achilles into his final, fatal battle, the hero’s colossal horses writhe, frothing at the mouth, in an energetic movement. After his Roman training, Regnault discovered Spain and Morocco before dying prematurely in combat during the 1870 war at the Battle of Buzenval in January 1871.
