Henze, Adolf (1814-1883)
A LARGE LIBRARY GLOBE, CIRCA 1889
Published in 1889 as the largest commercial globe ever made. Adolf Henze was a German publisher of the periodical Illustrierter Anzeiger für Contor und Bureau. Issued six times a year, the magazine addressed practical concerns of merchants, including exchange rates, postage regulations, and copyright law. To encourage subscriptions, it frequently included complimentary supplements such as maps and conversion charts. Between 1885 and 1890, subscribers could collect 24 printed gores and two polar caps for Henze’s monumental 106 cm-diameter Erd-Globus. For a fee, those with a complete set could either request a pneumatic assembly kit or have the globe professionally mounted on two joined hemispheres and pedestal base.
