Lot 65 | Historia general del Perú
Valeur estimée
$ 5 000 – 7 000
First complete edition, second issue, of de la Vega’s history of Peru. Born in Cuzco to a Spanish conquistador and a Peruvian noblewoman, Vega describes the Spanish conquest of Peru in the second and final part of his history of Peru. The first part, published at Lisbon in 1609, concerns Inca society (see previous lot). Vega’s contribution to early Inca history is unequaled, but his history of the conquest, however, was banned in the 18th-century by Charles II of Spain for its portrayal of the conquistadors. Sabin 98755.
Folio (302 × 202mm). Large woodcut of the Virgin Mary on title-page, woodcut initials (without ¶8, spotting, light stains, occasional toning, few wormholes). Contemporary limp vellum, evidence of fore-edge ties (separating from spine’s tail, stains, few wormholes). Provenance: contemporary manuscript titling on spine, inscription on title-page and annotations.
