HORAE, use of Besançon, in Latin and French
Ces presentes heures a lusaige de [Besançon] sont toutes au long sans riens requerir avec quesles grans suffrages. Paris: Jean de la Roche for Guillaume Eustace, 1514.
Finely illuminated Book of Hours, a rare edition. Davies and Brunet describe a closely related edition of the same year for the use of Rome; this Besancon edition contains the same cuts, except for the Death of the Virgin and the Death of Uriah. It substitutes the rare device of Guillaume Anabat (with initials removed from the shield) for the Death of the Virgin, repeating it again for the Office of the Dead. The cuts are loose copies of illustrations used by Pychore/Kerver, Vostre-Pigouchet set 3, and Hardouin (cf. Davies 275). Davies considered the 15 small cuts 'important' and to be by the artist responsible for Vivien's cuts. The use is deleted from title (replaced in manuscript with 'dauphin') and d4r, although quires are marked 'B'. Brunet Heures, 289; not in Lacombe.

Printed on vellum, octavo (206 x 127mm). 98 leaves. Large Eustace device, 17 large metalcuts (including one repeat), 15 small metalcuts, illuminated in god and colours by a contemporary hand, painted borders in red, gold and blue around each large metalcut, painted multiple-piece metalcut ornamental border on pages opposite large cuts, liquid-gold initials and line-filler alternating on pink and blue ground, yellow capital strokes, ruled in red (‘bescancon’ erased from title and d4r, decoration occasionally shaved at top). Early 20th-century calf gilt, tooled to a strapwork design, single ornament in spine compartments, gilt edges (hinges split and repaired, backstrip worn). Provenance: prayer written in a contemporary hand below colophon – Clarence S. Bement (modern bookplate) – William Foyle (sale Christie’s, 11 July 2000, lot 207; booklabel).
