It's a Battlefield

Graham Greene

GREENE, Graham (1904-1991). It's a Battlefield. London: William Heinemann, 1934.

First edition, first impression of Greene’s fifth novel. Although it has all the socio-political ingredients of a best-selling thriller, It's a Battlefield instead takes flight from the influence of great modernist works such as Ulysses and Mrs Dalloway. The blurb on the front flap of the dust-jacket notes: ‘Graham Greene’s new novel is a panorama of London to-day. He has used the methods of the cinema, with its close-ups and panning shots and angles, each character in turn acting as the camera eye.’ Wobbe A6a.

Octavo. (Faint crease from production flaw to dedication and p.ix with quotation from Kinglake, as well as to adjacent leaves, tiny faint spots in margins of pp.62-3, final gathering lightly spotted mainly confined to fore-edge.) Original black cloth, spine lettered in gilt, publisher’s seal stamped in blind on lower cover (faintly cocked); original pictorial dust-jacket by Youngman Carter in first state (spine lightly browned, head and tail of spine of jacket fractionally chipped and frayed, 20mm closed tear to rear panel).
