JACQUES-JOSEPH TISSOT CALLED JAMES TISSOT (1836-1906), ON THE CASTLE TERRACE (ALSO KNOWN AS KEW GARDENS), OIL ON PANEL

This delicate painting can be interpreted as a love letter to James Tissot's (1836–1906) companion, the beautiful Irishwoman Kathleen Newton (1854–1882), and to their life together in London, his adopted city in the final years of his life. Here the artist carefully combines elements of Hampton Court Palace, with its distinctive red brick exterior and decorative white stone masonry, with those of the Temple of the Sun in Kew Gardens. Against this theatrical backdrop, he places Kathleen and her son, Cecil George Newton (born 1876), her niece Lilian Hervey (1875-1952), and an unidentified young girl who appears in other paintings by Tissot.

The painting was based on the numerous sketches of Kathleen and her family that Tissot made, as well as the many photographs he took and used to create other painted and engraved compositions. This practice allows us to draw several parallels between On the Terrace of the Castle and other paintings by Tissot from the same period. Kathleen, seated on the left, wears a red floral dress with pleated sleeves and collar, as in a version of The Elder Sister (private collection), while Cecil is depicted in a pose similar to that in The Garden Bench (Andrew Lloyd Weber collection). The fur rug, lined with red fabric, also covers the garden bench in this same painting. Several paintings by Tissot depicting his family are set against the backdrop of Hampton Court Park, including Hampton Court (sold at Christie's, New York, 21 October 2022, lot 135) and Le Petit Nemrod (Musée des Beaux-Arts et d'Archéologie, Besançon, inv. 906.7.1).

Sur la terrasse du château was part of the collection of Carle Dreyfus (1875-1952), before being inherited by his niece, Alice Goldschmidt (1906-2008), who married Maurice Stern (1888-1962). An expert in French sculpture, objets d'art and furniture, Carle Dreyfus worked mainly at the Louvre, for which he published several major works on the museum's collections. In 1933, he became curator of the Department of Objects of Art, but was forced to leave his post in 1940 due to the Vichy regime's laws on the status of Jews. Protected by his colleagues, he went into hiding during the war. After the liberation, he advised the Commission for the Recovery of Artistic Property and participated in the restitution of stolen works. He then resumed his work at the Louvre Museum until his death in 1952.

We would like to thank Krystyna Matyjaszkiewicz for confirming the attribution of this painting to James Tissot on the basis of a photographic examination of the work and for contributing to the writing of this note.
