JANSSONIUS, Johannes (1588-1664)

Novus Atlas Absolutissimus … Der Neunde Theil, beschreibet Die Waßer-Welt, oder See-Atlas. Amsterdam: Johannes Janssonius, 1657.

A beautifully contemporary hand-coloured copy of the sea- and coastal-volume from the Novus Atlas Absolutissimus, including the map of ‘Novi Belgii’, showing the island of Manhattan with the second earliest view of New Amsterdam. The 11-volume Novus Atlas Absolutissimus is described by Van der Krogt as 'the most developed of the editions of the "Novus Atlas,"' noting that 'The atlases were probably made up in a very small number of copies and later obviously only made to order'. This volume contains the 23 nautical charts of the 'Novus Atlas' – excepting the charts of the Old World – together with 9 newly engraved charts by Janssonius and 7 charts by Nicolaus Visscher. The new maps show America and the Caribbean (5), East Asia (5), Azores, Canaries, Cape Verde, Crete, Malta and Sicily. Of particular importance to the Americas are the Visscher 'Novi Belgii' map (Burden 315 & Corrigenda, State 4), with a beautiful view of New Amsterdam below the title cartouche, probably the second view of the city, while California is depicted as an island. Van der Krogt, 1:428.9; Burden I, 315.

Volume 9 only of the Novus Atlas Absolutissimus, folio (502 x 321mm). Engraved title page, 39 double-page engraved maps all finely coloured and heightened in gilt by a contemporary hand (variable spotting and staining throughout, heavier to text leaves, two marginal repaired tears to two text leaves). Publisher’s vellum, paneled in gilt, with central arabesque enclosing armillary sphere, gilt edges (extremities rubbed, with head of spine defective, and small chip to fore-edge of lower cover, lacking silk ties). Provenance: evidence of bookplate removed.
