[JUDAICA] - SURENHUYS, Willem (estensore; 1664-1729) - Mischna sive totius Hebraeorum juris. Amsterdam: Gerardo e Jacopo Borstius, 1698-1703.

First edition of the Mischna, one of the fundamental texts of Judaism. Written in Hebrew and Latin, it contains some Latin notes alongside the Hebrew text by Moses Maimonide and Ovadia Da Bertinoro. The illustrations, present only in the first three volumes, are very scarce and are not found in the following parts due to the death of the engraver Rabbi Isaac Coenraads. Most of the plates contain 8 to 16 illustrations followed by explanatory text. Surenhuys, a professor of Greek and Hebrew at the University of Amsterdam, translated nearly two-thirds of the treatises and used versions of other scholars to complete the work.
.

6 tomes in 3 volumes, folio (353 x 234mm). Text in Hebrew and Latin, each part with engraved frontispiece, titles in red and black with woodcut vignettes, 9 plates, 3 of which are double-page and one folding, many followed by an explanatory text, engraved illustrations in the third tome, woodcut initials and tailpieces (lacking final leaf, perhaps blank, of the preliminaries 6 * 2 is in volume 4, occasional spotting, some tiny traces of worming and little stains). Contemporary Dutch vellum (some staining, one of the spine worn, spine label almost lost). (3)
