Lot 19 | Käthe Kollwitz (1867-1945)
Valeur estimée
£ 1 500 – 2 500
Autograph letters between Kollwitz, the Reichsbank President Hjalmar Schacht, the artist Lesser Ury, and Nathan and Grete Marx, of which two are signed (‘Käthe Kollwitz’), Berlin, 1917-1929.
In German, 13 pages, various sizes (139 x 90mm postcard to 297 x 211mm typed letter), with 1 envelope. Provenance: Sotheby’s, 28-29 May 1992, lot 212.
A record of the art-world and finance networks of Weimar Germany and Poland. In one example, Kollwitz responds to a potential buyer, the Polish industrialist Nathan Marx, to whom Lesser Ury also writes in this collection. She tells him that none of her prints are available, since she has recently sold the majority of these to ‘Richter’ in Dresden. She plans to keep the rest in her collection. However, her drawings remain available, and there are many at her house in Berlin where she would be pleased to receive Marx. In a separate postcard she also promises him a new print from her Bauernkrieg series.
