Small votive thangka depicting a Gelugpa patriarch with sword and bell on lotus flowers, and a book, and two attendants - Outer Mongolia, 18th c. - Tempera and gold on cotton fabric, original border with cotton and silk; inscriptions (some barely legible) in gold Tibetan characters. Small touching worship thangka. His right hand is held in the gesture of instruction, with the tips of thumb and forefinger touching. Both hands additionally hold a lotus branch each with the emblems sword and bell. The left hand lies relaxed in the lap and embraces additionally a book. Two lamas sit before him to the left and right and hold an alms bowl and a book in their right hands and a lotus branch each to the left, showing the mudra of reasoning. In the midst of the three clergymen lie three jewels as offerings, and possibly two adorants crouch beside them? In the lower part of the small painting, in the midst of a blazing fire, the blue-colored extremely wrathful protector Ksetrapala can be seen on a black bear. He belongs to the companions of Mahakala, and is considered in particular as a protector of the corpse fields. On his forehead, with the third eye, he carries a skull.
