The lock mechanism is a so-called "Bramah lock". It was invented by the English engineer Joseph Bramah in 1784. Until well into the 19th century, it was considered one of the most secure lock mechanisms and was very difficult to pick. For this reason, it was mainly used in the construction of safes.
