Description: In total 175 pieces. Consisting of: 21 underplates/dinner plates (ø 30cm), 14 dinner plates (ø 27cm), 14 soup plates (ø 22,5cm), 12 bread plates (ø 15cm), 3 small oval platters (30x24cm), 3 large oval platters (37,5x30cm), 1 round serving plate (ø 30cm), 4 round vegetable bowls (ø top rim 22cm), 1 sauce boat on fixed saucer, 19 coffee cups and 18 saucers, 12 mocca cups and 12 saucers, 6 tea cups with 6 saucers, 17 cake plates (ø 21cm), 4 egg cups (or spice vessels), 2 milk jugs, 2 sugar bowls, 1 Tea pot, 1 coffee pot, 2 tea warmers with tealight holder
The tea warmers as well as the egg cups are from the KPM series URBINO. The saucers of the mocca cups are from the series ARKADIA AMOR.
Mark: Some pieces with sceptre mark with KPM, some only with sceptre mark.
Until the present day, this classic yet timeless service can be ordered from the KPM as an extensive dinner- , coffee- or tea service. It originated in 1938 when it was designed by Trude Petri and Siegmund Schütz for the 175th anniversary of the manufactory.
While Petri was responsible for the striking design of the strict, almost cylindrical shapes with flat lids, conical cups and broadly rimmed plates, the medallions, based on ancient cameo tradition, were contributed by the sculptor Siegmund Schütz.
In his 38 years at the KPM, Schütz had a significant influence on the design of modern porcelain. His work was mostly modelled on shapes taken from nature and he took inspiration from the classical antiquity. It is therefore not surprising that the historical motifs for the so-called "arcadian Service", in keeping with ist name, take up the utopia of Arcadia.
The scenes of the relief medallions are manifold and mostly take up Greek and Roman mythology. They range from a hunting Diana, Ceres, Neptune, Diomedes or Paris to more unspecific depictions of bacchantes, nymphs or wave riders.
Characteristic is the interplay of light and shadow, the contrast of the puristic shapes of the service with the fanciful medallions executed idyllically in bisque.
Although some of the plaster molds and medallions had to be redesigned after losses during World War II, this collaborative work by Petri and Schütz has to this day lost none of its charm and uniqueness. Thus, the KPM still advertises the service today as a "fruitful combination of feminine grace and masculine expressiveness."
In the service exhibited here we see, among other things, the depiction of the nymph Nereide in the relief medallions on each of the large gourmet plates. Those on the dinner plates show the nymph Syrinx. The soup plates are each decorated with an image of the Sphinx. The reliefs on the dessert plates show varying portraits: Demeter three times, a Bacchante five times, a wave rider four times, the Naiad three times, as well as Neptune once and Ceres once. Also the other pieces of the service, except the cups, which were executed without relief medallions, show the variety of the theme world which Siegmund Schütz took up for this service.
