Elisabeth Drewes Kofoed worked at Bing & Groendahl between 1896 and 1912, primarily as a porcelain painter and decorator. Her designs, on the other hand, are less well known. However, the artist proved herself to be a talented modeller. One of the finest examples of her great talent as a modeller is the large vase with flowering magnolia branches. The same vase was presented at the Paris World Exhibition in 1900. Another example can be found in the collection of the CLAY Ceramic Museum in Middelfart, Denmark.
The unusual shape of the vase presents the greatest technical challenge. The round body in cross-section transitions to an oval at the mouth. The surface of the middle section is covered with relief magnolias. The strong relief completely conceals the basic shape and makes the hard porcelain look organic. In contrast to the solid base with bulging rings, the delicate openwork between the individual flowers below the upper rim lends the whole piece a sense of lightness and elegance. It is easy to see that the artist was strongly influenced by Effie Hegermann-Lindencrone and Fanny Garde.
