VERSAILLES – [FÉLIBIEN, André (1619-1695)]. Les Divertissements de Versailles donnez par le Roy à toute sa cour au retour de la conquête de la Franche-Comté en 1674. Paris: Sebastien Mabre-Cramoisy for l'Imprimerie royale, 1676.

Festival book commemorating the celebrations held for Louis XVI upon his return from the conquest of la France-Comte. The festivities included productions of Lully’s Alceste, Moliere’s Le Malade Imaginaire, and Racine’s Iphigenie—alongside copious banquets and fireworks. "The illustrations show what is described in a lifelike narrative, incorporating details on the persons involved and the food, demonstrating that they are not simply decorative but plausible and documentary. This is the value of the verisimilitude of Félibien's masterfully crafted texts, which fulfill their intention to illuminate the world of Louis XIV" (The Edible Monument). Watanabe 1934; The Edible Monument pp. 46-48.

Folio (399 x 274mm). 6 double-page engraved plates by Jean le Pautre, engraved head- and tail-pieces (faint dampstaining). 19th-century maroon quarter morocco with blindstamped sigil of William Stirling-Maxwell. Provenance: William Stirling-Maxwell (1818-1878; binding and large bookplate) – Pierpont Morgan Library (deaccession stamp).
