Unique, extra-illustrated presentation set with approximately 250 original letters and documents, including eleven autographs of the Emperor Napoleon and over 1000 portraits, views, facsimiles, maps, etc. In full red morocco extra, extended to 12 volumes. This set was prepared for Warren C. Crane and includes an autograph presentation note from the author. Highlights of the original documents include: NAPOLEON I. Letter signed (“Bonaparte’), Au Quartier Général de Caire, 28 brumaire an 7 [18 November 1798], to General d'Estaing, asking for information concerning the sex of people dying each day in Cairo. * NECKER, Jacques. Letter signed, Paris, 30 October 1778, to M. de Villeneuve, concerning fitting out a merchant ship going to St. Domingo. * LA FAYETTE, Marquis de. Letter signed, Paris, 18 November 1779, to Vicomte Wevrus, assuring him of his desire to serve him and his family. * NAPOLEON I. Letter signed (“Bonaparte”), Au Quartier Géneral Albinga, 18 germinal an 4 [7 April 1796], to the chief agent of military transport, informing him that Citoven' Berin has been appointed Inspector General of military equipment. * GEORGE III. Document signed granting a gratuity of £1500 to John Stanley, late of the Leeward Islands, countersigned by William Pitt, St. James, 6 June 1798, 11 pp. folio. * DAVOUT, L.N., Prince d'Eckmuhl, as Minister of War during 100 Days. Letter signed, Ministry of War, 21 April 1815, to Napoleon, concerning arrangements for making up the Dragoon Regiment of the Guard to full numbers, with endorsement signed “N” by NAPOLEON. * LOUIS XIV. Two letters signed, St. Germain en Laye and Fontainebleau, 1 February 1682 and 25 October 1705, to Chevalier de Janson and the Elector of Bavaria, the first countersigned by Colbert. * DUROC, Gerard Christophe Michel, Duc de Frioul. Autograph note signed, 29 germinal [an 10] [19 April 1802], concerning a reimbursement of 600 francs from the treasury, endorsement signed (“Bonaparte”) by NAPOLEON I. * TOUSSAINT L'OUVERTURE. P.D. Letter signed, Au Quartier Général de Kao,. 13, fructidor an 4. [30 August 1796], to General Gassonville of the Brigade of Artillery, informing him that he has ordered General Bartelemy to send him his derrick for mounting cannon and mortar. A more complete listing is available on request. Signed multiple times by the author.

Four volumes extended to 12, quarto (307 x 210mm). Full crushed red morocco, double gilt fillet borders, large central Imperial arms of Napoleon surrounded by repeated cyphers and bee devices on covers, spines paneled with the same tools, green morocco doublures, top edges gilt, others uncut; slipcases (fading to spines and slipcases). Sold as a collection, not subject to return. Provenance: Warren C. Crane (presentation letters signed by the author and by the publisher bound in) – Christie’s New York, 8 March 1978, lot 111.
