LISTER, Martin (1638?-1712) - Historiae Sive Synopsis Methodicae Conchyliorum. Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1823.

Internally a fresh copy with good imprint of the plates of the third edition of this monumental work. Martin Lister is most remembered for his work in natural history. He was the first to suggest that rocks might be characterized by their fossil contents, and to propose the creation of geological maps. Lister’s best known work, with detailed illustrations of all known shells (largely executed by his eldest daughters), was originally issued in parts and few copies are identical. The final version, Historia sive Synopsis Methodica Conchyliorum, with over a thousand plates, was not completed until 1697. Its publication led to Lister’s position as the founder of conchology in England.

Folio (420 x 265mm). Engraved illustrations printed numbered from 1 to 1059, with a few numbers omitted as per index (89, 164, 195, 196, 222, 923 and 961) and some repeated (101a, 101b, 168, 512, 822, 846, 883, 931, 965 and 990), followed by 22 engravings numbered 1 to 22, each on a separate leaf (slight offsetting, occasional light spotting). Modern brown morocco over marbled boards, uncut.
