Luís Tinoco (b.1969)
Autograph manuscript signed (in ink, 'Luís Tinoco') of 'Autumn Wind' for wind quintet, London, 9 March 1998
A work for wind quintet in two movements, inspired by quotations from Philip Larkin.

Autograph title (in red and green crayon) and 11 pages in pencil, 298 x 421mm, 18-stave paper, notated on three five-stave systems per page, for alto flute (changing to flute and piccolo), oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon.

Provenance:
(1) Sotheby's, 1 December 2010, part of lot 111.

(2) Schøyen Collection, MS 5478/1.

The work comprises two movements, each headed with autumnal quotations by Philip Larkin: 'And I her son, though summer-born / And summer-loving, none the less / Am easier when the leaves are gone' and 'But come each eavening [sic] back to a high room / Above deep gardenfuls of air, on wich [sic] / Already has been laid an Autumn bloom'.

Born in Portugal, Tinoco completed his studies in London and York; he now lectures at the Escola Superior de Música in Lisbon. His best known works include the music theatre project Evil Machines (2008) and the chamber opera Paint Me (2010).
