MONUMENTAL PENDULUM CLOCK WITH BUST OF HENRY IV AND VICTORIA.

Lagrange, Louis. Paris

Date: 1st half 19th century.
Technique: Bronze, with matt and polished gilding and partially with black patina.
Description: Rectangular, two-tiered base on four paw feet. The front decorated with relief appliqués.
On the postament-shaped case a bust of Henry IV of France with the inscription "Il fut de
ses sujets le vainqueur et le père", a verse from Voltaire's "Henriade". To the right of
the case, a winged Victoria holding a victor's wreath over the bust. Enamel dial with
Roman numerals. Large 14-day pendulum movement with thread suspension and half-hour strike
on bell.
Measurement: 25x61x82cm.
Mark: On dial inscr. "Lagrange à Paris" (Louis Lagrange, Paris, Rue St-Martin, 1812).

After Voltaire's publication of "La Henriade", a poem written in 1728 in honour of Henry IV, there was a revival of interest in the first Bourbon ruler. One of the most popular kings, who, after peace had been restored, had given the people back their former prosperity.
