Tour programme for the Newport Jazz Festival Concert Tour, 1959, signed by Thelonious Monk, Nat Adderley and Max Roach. Monk signs in blue ballpoint pen on his portrait page, the Adderley brothers, who were part of George Shearing’s short-lived experiment with a big band, sign on the front cover, and Max Roach signs in blue ballpoint pen to the back cover. With Shearing and Monk headlining, the tour opened at Carnegie Hall, New York, on 4 September 1959, concluding 16 days later in Philadelphia.
Folio (304 x 228 mm). Wire-stitched in glossy black, blue and orange self-wraps.
[With:] a souvenir programme for the 1955 Newport Jazz Festival, with cover art by Robert Brownjohn, an article by Duke Ellington on ‘The Future of Jazz’ and a portfolio of studio portraits by Richard Avedon, signed at their Avedon portraits by Stan Rubin and trombonist Bill Spilka of the Tigertown Five, additionally signed by Woody Herman, Roy Eldridge, Errol Garner, and Coleman Hawkins, wire-stitched in the original self-wraps, 283 x 215 mm.
[And:] four black and white photographs by Roy Schatt from the 1957 Newport Jazz Festival, featuring pianist Dave Brubeck, clarinettist Pee Wee Russell, baritone Gerry Mulligan and altoist Paul Desmond, later gelatin silver prints, printed in the photographer’s lifetime, each with photographer’s credit stamp verso, each 203 x 252 mm.
