Federico Cesi's copy of the Italian "pocket Ortelius", with the Accademia dei Lincei stamp and the Cesi arms on binding. Federico Cesi (1585-1630) was a precocious Italian nobleman who, at just 18, founded the Accademia dei Lincei, one of Europe's first scientific societies. He welcomed Galileo Galilei as a member and played no small role in advancing the rise of experimental science in the seventeenth century. Volumes from Cesi's library are very desirable as being themselves a sort of instrument of the scientific revolution. The auction records of RBH locate only one other as having sold since the modern forgeries of Cesi's provenance were discovered and explicated in the 2010s. This posthumous edition of Ortelius's work was translated from the Latin by Giovanni Paulet d'Anversa and supplemented by additional world and celestial maps plus 12 regional maps including maps of Iceland and an early, largely accurate separate map of Japan. Koeman IIIA 332:22.
Oblong octavo (112 x 155 mm). Engraved printer's device on title, engraved armorial dedication on verso of title, 122 engraved full-page maps or plans, blanks present (toned). Contemporary red morocco gilt, covers with Cesi family arms, all edges gilt (neatly rebacked preserving original spine, darkening, a little worming to inside covers, gilt edges rubbed). Provenance: Federico Cesi, 1585-1630 (personal Lynx inkstamp to title and to O7v; binding insignia; no.1193 in Biagetti's La biblioteca di Federico Cesi, Rome, 2008) – Gaspare Marra Gesuita (18th century ownership inscription on inside lower cover) – Frederick A. Wadsworth, 1871-1943 (bookplate).
