PARACELSUS (c. 1493-1541)

Archidoxa...zwlff Bcher darin alle gehaimnss der natur erffnet. Edited by Johannes Albertus Wimpineus. Munich: Adam Berg, 1570.

Second Munich edition of Paracelsus’ Archidoxa with the first edition of the supplement. The first edition was published in Cracow in 1569. Two editions were published in Basel the following year, as were two in Munich, and one each in Cologne and Strasbourg. ‘Paracelsus's reputation as a founder of chemistry rests on his Archidoxa, which contains the greater part of his chemical work. Paracelsus was the first to attempt a system of chemistry; his system dealt with all chemicals known to him, and involved a classification of materials and operations’ (Norman). The supplement ‘includes tracts on the use of magnets in medicine, occult philosophy, the correct administration of medicine, and how to extract poisons from venomous animals’ (Norman). Pagel, Paracelsus pp. 275-78; Partington II, 136-38; Sudhoff 129; Norman 1637.

Two parts in one, quarto (210 x 150mm). Woodcut portrait of Paracelsus on title, repeated on *2v, and second title recto, portrait of Wimpineus on *3r, a few woodcut diagrams in supplement, woodcut ornaments (title rehinged, some marginal damp-staining and soiling, small ink smudge on a few leaves at end, worm-track in T2 just touching a few letters, without final blank). Late 18th-century speckled boards (a little rubbed). Provenance: armorial blindstamp on title – H. F. Norman (sale Christie’s NY, 18 March 1998, lot 149; bookplate).
