PARACELSUS, Theophrastus Philippus Aureolus Bombastus von Hohenheim (c.1493-1541)
Baderbüchlin. Sechs köstliche Tractat, armen und reychen nutzlich und notwendig von Wasserbädern. Edited by Adam von Bodenstein (1528-77). Mulhouse: Peter Schmid, 1562.
First edition of one of the earliest works on thermal springs and their health benefits by the polymath Renaissance doctor and father of balneology, Paracelsus. Only one copy appears in RBH (Freilich 2002). He discusses hydrotherapy and treatments for a range of maladies, including gout, paralysis, and leprosy; nymphs and water spirits; and the influence of the cosmos. He also describes specific spa towns and hot springs at Gastein, Teplitz, Wildbad, Baden, the Valais and elsewhere. The large woodcut depicts a communal hot spring with men and women soaking, bathing, washing each other’s backs. First published posthumously, it was edited by his student, Dr. Adam von Bodenheim. This copy was owned by Maurice Villaret, a French neurologist, known for his work on localization of vascular lesions of the brain. Sudhoff 45; Graesse V, 127; VD16 P-413

Quarto (202 x 153mm). With final blank leaf, title printed in red and black, editor’s name printed in red at the end of the preface, 5 woodcuts consisting of one large block of a large spa bathing pool used 4 times and one small cut, printer’s device at end, metalcut ornamental initials and tailpieces (few small, light stains). Modern binding of old burgundy goatskin tooled in gilt. Provenance: Dr Maurice Villaret ((1877-1946; bookplate).
