Further details

Richard Doetsch-Benziger (1877-1958) was a distinguished Swiss entrepreneur and art collector, renowned for his deep admiration of Paul Klee. Klee is known to have gifted Doetsch-Benziger a work of art annually as a Christmas gift in the years 1933, 1934, 1936, 1937 & 1938. Given this pattern, it is highly likely that Klepper-Reiter was a Christmas gift from Klee in 1935, which aligns with the Christmas wishes included on the artist's mount.

Klepper-Reiter belongs to a rare series within Klee's œuvre distinguished for its expressionist style. Klee was known to be very reluctant to sell his drawings to collectors, and often refused to part with them at all. As such, it is particularly significant that the artist chose to part with this piece during his lifetime, making it a unique and notable gift.
